Conference: "Inequity in Education From a Global Perspective. Systemic Challenges Amidst Multiple Crises"
19.01.2024, 10.00 – 16.00 | Alois Wagner-Saal, C3 – Centrum für Internationale Entwicklung, Sensengasse 3, Vienna.
Hybrid event in English language (German in German-only Working groups possible)
The struggle for the right to education has always been linked to the promise of equal opportunities. Yet, inequities in terms of access to education, learning achievements and social mobility effects have characterized education systems since their conception. While the UN-Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) re-introduced a focus on inequity within the international development debates, the latest multiple crises have exacerbated educational disparities within and between countries, as well as in a North-South perspective. What are the causes of these inequities, which particular challenges arise from current multiple crises and which strategies do we have to overcome them?
Keynote 1: "Educational Inequities in the Global South in times of multiple crises. Causes, mechanisms of reproduction and strategies to overcome them."
- Leon Tikly, Bristol University
Keynote 2: "Educational inequities in OECD countries in times of multiple crises."
- Veronika Wöhrer, University of Vienna
Working groups:
- WG 1: The contribution of small actors to educational equity in the Global South
- WG 2: Global education policies and local needs. How to bridge the gap?
- WG 3: Will Austria reach SDG4? Educational inequities in Austria.

"This still needs to be signed..." Informed Consent in Empirical Social Research from a Legal and Ethical Perspective
24.11.2021, 15 - 17:30 h | Online
In our CoAct (Co-Designing Citizen Social Science for Collective Action) project, we are conducting research using the participatory action research approach with young people who are on the threshold of education and career. As part of the EU project, we have been working on informed consent processes and have repeatedly faced various challenges. For this reason, we are taking this event as an opportunity to provide information on the legal basis, share our thoughts and findings, and discuss them together.
Part 1: Lecture and Q&A
Laura Graßie, LL.M., a lawyer from the GDPR project team at the University of Vienna, will begin with a lecture on the legal basis of the GDPR for research projects, focusing on various target groups such as children and young people, as well as people with learning difficulties. She will also discuss consent forms in online research. After the presentation, there will be an opportunity to ask questions related to your own research.
Part 2: Workshop
Mag. Teresa Wintersteller BA. & Mariam Malik, BA. will then lead a workshop in which consent is understood as a process that goes beyond the legal and formal act. Questions of social and societal contexts will be brought together with acceptance and rejection of consent. Together, participants will develop possibilities and strategies for making informed consent processes in their own research practice transparent, documenting them, and reflecting on them.
The event is part of the research project "Participatory Action Research with Young People" which is part of the EU Horizon 2020 project CoAct, and is being held in cooperation with the GDPR project team at the University of Vienna.
*The event is for employees of the University of Vienna.

Science for everyone? Hard-to-reach Groups in Citizen Science and Science Communication
18.05.2021, 14:00 -16:00 Uhr | Online OeAD-Zentrum für Citizen Science
With the aim of democratizing science and actively involving the general public, science communication and citizen science are increasingly focusing their attention on so-called “hard-to-reach target groups.” But who or what are hard-to-reach target groups? Which strategies prove to be helpful and effective? How can diversity and inclusion be ensured?
The OeAD Center for Citizen Science would like to reflect on these questions with experts from various fields, disciplines, and institutions in a keynote speech followed by a panel discussion, and use practical examples to show how hard-to-reach groups can best be reached.

Digital Youth Work: Challenges, Tools, and Impact - A discussion about designing inclusive offerings that make a difference
Alicja Pawluczuk and Juha Kiviniemi, both experts in digital youth work, share their expertise on involving ‘hard-to-reach’ young people in digital youth work. They discuss best practice examples and address the issue of evaluating the impact of services. In times of a pandemic, digital youth work has become indispensable when it comes to reaching, supporting, and encouraging young people in their everyday lives.
COVID-19 and the accompanying restrictions on social contact have established digital youth work as an indispensable tool in many countries. While digital youth work can support young people in using online services by promoting equality, expanding skills, and creating opportunities for participation, online services can also lead to exclusion. This is because not all young people have the necessary access to technical devices or a stable internet connection.
In our webinar, we will therefore first address the question of how to engage so-called ‘hard-to-reach’ young people online. We will look at strategies, tools, and approaches that aim to minimize the ‘digital divide’ by examining practical examples and taking a look at other projects in Europe. Secondly, we will address the issue of evaluating the impact of digital youth work, as there is a growing need to identify useful factors for evaluating digital youth work, particularly with regard to its target group, objectives, and social impact. To this end, we will also discuss participatory approaches.
To address these two challenges in digital youth work, we have invited Alicja Pawluczuk and Juha Kiviniemi to share their expertise with us and provide insights into their research, practical work experience, and assessments. We look forward to an exciting discussion!
*The event is free of charge and will be held in English.

Sociological lectures: When Dreams (Don't) Come True: Educational Aspirations of Young People in Transition
Franz Astleithner, Raphaela Kogler, Susanne Vogl (University of Vienna)
20.10.2020 at 17.00 | Online-Veranstaltung
Educational and career aspirations depend on social background and have an impact on educational trajectories. They are therefore a key factor in the reproduction of social inequality: higher social positions of parents are associated with higher aspirations among young people. Transitions in the education system are particularly revealing for social science research in this regard, as they set the direction for the rest of a person's life and thus represent biographical crystallization points in the reproduction of social inequality.
In this presentation, we will examine the initial conditions before young people transition from the Neue Mittelschule (New Middle School) in Vienna and their subsequent paths. The data is based on qualitative and quantitative data from the study “Wege in die Zukunft” (Paths to the Future) conducted by the Institute of Sociology at the University of Vienna. We will focus on two questions:
- How do parents' migration and educational backgrounds influence educational aspirations at the end of middle school?
- How do educational and career aspirations arise, and how do they develop after the transition?
Although experiences are highly individual, certain patterns emerge in relation to both questions. In addition to theoretical questions, there is also the challenge of effectively utilizing educational support services.
With book presentation:
- Wege in die Zukunft. Lebenssituationen Jugendlicher am Ende der Neuen Mittelschule
- Jörg Flecker, Veronika Wöhrer, Irene Rieder (Hg.), 2020, Vienna University Press
