Travelling

Train

Travelling by train is the most recommended (and in Austria very reliable) option. You can easily find a suitable connection with the OEBB route planner by entering ‘1090 Vienna, Sensengasse 3/1’ as your destination. You can also book the new night trains via the OEBB website.

If you don't trust computers, it's best to proceed as follows:

  1. Leave the train at Wien-Meidling.
  2. Take the underground line 6 in the direction of Florisdorf.
  3. Get off the underground at the Währinger Strasse/Volksoper stop.
  4. Take a tram in the direction of Schottentor.
  5. Get off the tram at the Sensengasse stop.
  6. Turn right at the traffic lights in the direction of travel.
  7. Go into the building with the number 3a.

This connection runs every 5-10 minutes.

Bus

Travelling by bus is also recommended. The buses stop either at the main railway station or in Vienna Erdberg. In both cases, the above-mentioned OEBB timetable information will help you if you enter ‘Sensengasse 3/1’ as your destination. If you don't trust it, here are the directions from the main station

  1.     Enter the main station, go up to one of the platforms 3-12 and go down again at the other end at Karl-Popper-Straße.
  2.     On the opposite side of the street, take tram line D in the direction of Wien Nußdorf.
  3.     Get off at the Schottentor stop.
  4.     Go down the escalator and get on any tram on the left.
  5.     Get off at the Sensengasse stop.
  6.     Turn right against the direction of travel at the traffic lights into Sensengasse.
  7.     After approx. 40 minutes enter house number 3a.

and from Erdberg

  1.     Take the U3 in the direction of Wien Ottakring.
  2.     Get off at the Wolkstheater stop.
  3.     Take a tram on line D in the direction of Nußdorf or line 1 in the direction of Prater Hauptallee.
  4.     Get off at the Schottentor stop.
  5.     Go down the escalator and get on any tram on the left.
  6.     Get off at the Sensengasse stop.
  7.     Turn right against the direction of travel at the traffic lights into Sensengasse.
  8.     After approx. 35 minutes, enter house number 3a.

Car

Travelling by car is not recommended. Vienna has a travel by train policy (or, as evil tongues claim, a no parking spaces policy). Parking spaces are therefore scarce and expensive - and there are very frequent controls. Parking without a parking ticket is very expensive even after a short time (30-60 minutes).

If you still want to come by car, you should use an electric car. Fast chargers are available at almost all motorway service areas in Austria. Then you could try to find a parking space in Boltzmanngasse. Officially, the maximum permitted parking time in Boltzmanngasse is three hours, like almost everywhere in Vienna. A parking ticket is available via the website handyparken.at. for €2.50 per hour. Extensions are technically possible - when a parking ticket is issued for exceeding the maximum permitted three hours despite a parking ticket is a problem that has not yet been researched in detail. We are happy to have self-paying test participants.

For longer parking, car parks are more recommendable, e.g. directly below the institute in the

  •     Sensengasse multi-storey car park (€22.40 per day)

There are also charging stations there (16kW CCS2, electricity costs extra). A little further away is the

  •     Siebenhirten P+R car park (€4.10 per day; then continue with the U6).

Parking at charging stations in Vienna is free of charge for the duration of charging. The nearest charging stations (both 16kW CCS2) are located directly opposite ( Sensengasse 2a) and just around the corner.

Plane

Travelling by plane is not recommended at all. If you consider it morally justifiable to fly and are actually travelling by plane, it is best not to take the overpriced City Airport Train at the airport, but rather the S-Bahn, a regional train or a Railjet. Details of the connections to Sensengasse 3/1 can be found on the aforementioned OEBB website.
