Elif Gül, BA MSc

Since September 2021, Elif Gül has held the predoctoral position in Gender Studies at the Department of Education under the supervision of Prof. Sabine Grenz. Her dissertation project, situated at the intersection of Science and Technology Studies and Gender Studies, examines obstetric violence in Austrian hospitals and takes the form of a praxeography—that is, an ethnographic qualitative analysis of care practices within the hospital. The theoretical framework draws on material-semiotic approaches that help illuminate the network of violence.

Since July 2025, Elif has been a guest researcher with a Marietta Blau stipend at Humboldt University in Berlin. In April 2024, she was a visiting scholar at the University of Basel, and from September 2023 to April 2024 she was a project member in the Elisabeth List Fellowship at the University of Graz, working on the project “Reproductive Justice in the Context of Queer and Trans* Reproduction with Assisted Reproductive Technologies (ART).”

In 2016, she completed her degree in Social and Cultural Anthropology at the University of Vienna, followed by a Master’s in Gender, Sexuality, and Society at the University of Amsterdam. Her master's thesis offers a social-scientific exploration of side effects of modern contraceptives, the mechanisms that legitimize them, and the ambivalent lived realities of users. Shortly thereafter, she began studying Science and Technology Studies at the University of Vienna and is writing about the (non-)production of contraceptives in relation to constructions of masculinity.

After her studies, Elif Gül worked as a research associate in the area of gender and diversity at the Austrian Society for Environment and Technology.

Elif Gül is also a sexuality educator and works with various Austrian organizations, engaging with children, adolescents, teachers, parents, and people with refugee experience.
